New for Winter 2025/26 at Hurricane Ridge! Are you considering expanding your skiing or snowboarding into the side country? This hands-on course introduces  you to the skills needed to explore beyond the ropes safely.  Perfect for anyone asking: “What do I actually need to go out of bounds? ”Every time you step outside the ski area, basic avalanche knowledge is essential. This one-day course covers:

  • Reading the avalanche forecast
  • Beacon, probe & shovel skills
  • Route planning
  • Avalanche rescue basics

 

Designed for:

  • Intermediate+ skiers and snowboarders (age 14+)
  • Ready to dip their toes into sidecountry terrain

You’ll be introduced to the skills and mindset needed to travel smarter.

 


 

This isn’t just a classroom — it’s a real sidecountry mission. Start at Hurricane Ridge Ski Area with:

  • Avalanche forecast review
  • Full gear & partner check

 

Then head out on a guided day tour. You’ll:

  • Take turns route planning (with expert guidance from instructor Joe Hoch)
  • Practice beacon searches & rescue scenarios after lunch
  • Ski/ride fun, accessible sidecountry lines

A full day of real-world learning — walk away with an understanding of how to plan and execute a safe, fun sidecountry day. You’ll gain the foundation to become a safer, more capable backcountry partner — and know exactly what to learn next. Next step: Avalanche Level 1 (or equivalent)
