This class should be taken by anyone participating in winter activities in the backcountry. It will be a three day class inside the Hurricane Ridge ski area. By the end of this class you should be able to: Develop a plan for travel in avalanche terrain. Demonstrate the ability to identify avalanche terrain. Effectively use a Risk Management Framework to make terrain choices in a group setting. Demonstrate effective beacon use and companion rescue. This is a non certificate class, if you need or want to take a certificate class we recommend Pro Guide Service for a AIARE Level 1 class. Cost is $275 for adults and $225 for kids 13 to 17 and class size is limited. You should have backcountry/AT skis or splitboard snowboard, plus a beacon. shovel and probe be an intermediate or better skier/snowboarder and be comfortable in ungroomed terrain. Your instructor. Joe has been teaching avalanche courses for 9 years full time in the winter, as well as backcountry ski guiding all over Washington, Alaska and Canada. In the summer he works as a mountain guide primarily on Mt Rainier, and has also guided Mt Denali, Mt Baker, and the Mexico volcanos including Pico de Orizaba.
